About the Emancipation Party
The Emancipation Party is a new political party, established on a new model, with the goal of empowering the American People to reclaim their democracy and to make needed adjustments to our institutions so that they once again “promote the general welfare” of THE PEOPLE.
We are supported solely by our Members, not from contributors buying favor for special interests.
Today’s major political parties, and their candidates, no matter how sincere their initial beliefs, are inevitably compromised by the need to raise funds from moneyed, especially Financial, interests to win elections.
As one might expect, the resultant system, especially our financial system and our tax code, is rigged so that the interests of The Powerful take priority over the interests of The People.
The result is that our economy is failing to deliver for the majority of the American people. The median wage earner has had no increase in income (after inflation) since 1979, while the income of the top 1% has approximately tripled; and the incomes of the top .01% have increased sevenfold! At the same time, social mobility has been falling. In the US, the chance of a young adult doing better than his or her parents is now is now less than in many countries in Europe.
Over the last 30 years the burden of debt, both public and private, has been continuously increasing, and much of this debt has not been used to create productive assets–it’s been created to fund burgeoning consumer credit balances to allow us to “live beyond our means” and for gambling on Wall Street. As a nation we have, in effect, been living the high life on credit cards that we intend to leave to our children and grandchildren to pay off. Except that our total debt is now so severe there is no way for them to actually pay it off.
Finally, in 2008, these absurdities reached the breaking point and the system began to fail. Only unprecedented interventions by central banks and governments around the world prevented a full collapse of the financial system. And the rescue, such as it was, bailed out the people who caused the problem, leaving everyone else holding the bag.
We are not yet Greece. But the clock is ticking. Our economy is being hollowed-out by a rapacious Financial sector, gross over indebtedness, and by the toxic effects of “stimulus”. Our political institutions are losing legitimacy as they are revealed as ineffective, corrupt or both. And our social fabric, the deep sense of trust and mutual respect without which no nation can long endure, is beginning to break-down.
And yet, our political process has done little or nothing to address this ongoing crisis, except to bail out the perpetrators.
About three years ago, it became clear to a group of us that the American political system was so screwed up, the politicians so completely out of ideas, and Money-in-Politics so completely blocking any possibility for serious reform from within the system, that the only option left seemed to be to roll up our sleeves and figure it out ourselves.
So some entrepreneurs, technologists, writers, scientists, and thinkers began to assess the real problem, put together a solution, and design a strategy that can actually be executed in-spite of our increasingly intractable political morass.
